Who are the thought leaders in the sculpture community?

For me Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Beuys. For me they were the ones that most expanded what the idea of art can be. It’s just that expansion.

Do you promote yourself or your work?

Not very well! I guess my work. I have an Instagram and Facebook, but I’m very timid about it. I’m kind of private. To me shouting that message for everybody in the world to hear, not that anybody is even listening, is very intimidating. I have a really hard time with that. I try to make myself do it because I think it’s probably good. That’s really scary to me. I would prefer to neither promote myself or my work to be honest.

Eric Knoche 6

Even though you are uncomfortable what do you do to promote yourself?

Not much! I have a mailing list, and that’s people who have signed up for it. I have a handful of announcements that I do every year  when I have shows. I have been doing a tiny little bit on Instagram and occasionally on Facebook.

Do you see yourself as a business owner?

Yeah, that I am very pragmatic about. I think if you attempting to make a living and make money off of what you are making, well, you are kidding yourself if you think you are not a business owner.

Eric Knoche 4

Is there a part of you that wishes you were better at being a promoter? And if so what would you do differently?

Yes, of course I wish I was better at it. I think I would probably make more money and it would make my life a lot easier if I could get up and post something everyday. It is really hard for me. Although that may be one of those things that changes everything else, so maybe not. Maybe I don’t wish that.
