Hedy Yang is a sophomore at the University of Michigan. Her interest in ceramics began in her senior year of high school where she was afforded an amazing space to work in and a creative teacher to provide inspiration. When she’s not in class, she spends her days in the studio trying new techniques and styles of work.

You are in a critical decision making phase of life. What are the factors that you need to weigh in order to make a good decision?
I think for me I think a lot about how it will affect my parents, and the people around me. Like if I were to decide I was going to take a year off school I think about how it would affect everyone. I feel like it is common sense to make good decisions.
You are also in a place of discovery too. How do you make decisions that allow for great discovery?
I try not to limit myself. I think a lot of people think too much about the decisions they are going to make, and they worry about what if this happens or what if that happens, and they think about all the negative things that could happen. So I try to think what if this great thing happens.
How do you develop a strong work ethic?
I have really no idea where my work ethic came from because in high school it was so terrible. But the one thing I have always had a good work ethic in has been my ceramics. Lately I have been trying to use that mentality toward everything else.
You have a passion not only for making but also for selling. How do you promote yourself so that you can get the sales?
I don’t think I have done a whole lot of self promotion, it is something I would like to work on more. I have just been really lucky and I have had some good opportunities.
What is your favorite social media platform and why?
Instagram. I am actually relatively new to Instagram, I think I have only had it for about a year. It’s a great network of artists that you can communicate with and I think it is really cool that you can see all these other people’s work.
