SampleHAUS, founded by Diana Adams, got its start by creatively up-cycling interior design waste into eclectic home decor. While working at an interior design firm, Diana was always surrounded by beautiful fabrics and other materials that mostly ended up getting thrown away for various reasons as discontinuation or project surpluses. Diana decided to begin collecting these excess materials and that’s when SampleHAUS was born. Today Diana’s pottery has taken the spotlight, but it is funding her mission to reduce textile waste in the world.

You quoted Christine Kane saying ” Sometimes when you are in a dark place you think you’ve been buried but you’ve actually been planted. ” What does that mean to you?

Well, to me, it can mean different things for different people, but for me I think one way to experience I guess “success” is to go through some type of pain or hardship. Yes, there are many people who are just given things and they just have it, but sometimes they end up loosing it because they didn’t know how to work hard to get to that spot. For example, the lottery. When people win the lottery they just loose the money because they don’t know how to manage it. For people who are really successful they are successful because they went through something that’s unique to them in their past that is probably either hurtful or some type of dark moment, maybe someone passed away or someone lost everything and they worked hard to get to where they are. Everyone just sees people’s success but they don’t see all the stuff that they went through to get there.

“If you don’t prioritize your life someone else will.” Tell me about that. 

I was personally going through…that was during the big boom for me when I was getting popular. People started reaching out, Oh can you wholesale here, can you wholesale here? Can you do this collaboration with me? At first I want to say yes to everything, Like I have never had an opportunity. Yes! Sure, sure, sure. Then all of sudden you are spread thin and you are not doing anything that you want to do. You are doing stuff that they want you to do. That quickly made me stop and think about, Okay what does Diana want? You know.

Where there is a woman there is magic. Tell me about that. Why is that important to you?

Because I am a woman and a jack of all trades and I’m magical. I don’t know, I just feel like we give spark to the world. If women weren’t here it would be pretty lame. Don’t you think?

Right on. Thank you. Yes. Totally. 

“Never be limited by other people’s limited imagination.” How does that apply to you?

I have a lot of crazy thoughts and I feel like when I tell people my thoughts I quickly get shot down. Like, No, that’s crazy, you can’t do that. There’s a lot of , You can’t. And I shut all of that off and I keep a lot of things to myself and I just start doing things.

“The meaning of life is to find your gif. The purpose of life is to give it away.” 

I think it’s really beautiful to share. Like what is the meaning of life, you know, it’s not just to make a lot of money. There are people here who have a lot of money who kill themselves. But I think the whole purpose of life is sharing that good and bringing people up with you and just enjoying life with other people.

“Fear is normal when you are growing.” I thought that was so powerful. Why was that powerful to you?

Because I think a lot of us put on the brakes when we feel fear. That has happened to me a lot of times. That’s why I hadn’t started my business, my art career after graduating with my art degree, because of that fear of not know what’s going to happen or how to do it. So I think that fear is important, it kind of guides you to the right path to go on. If you are feeling fear, go towards it, work through it, then that’s where your magic is going to be.

“When you are in silence the universe has a chance to turn up the volume.” Tell me about that. 

I love that quote. I was listening to a podcast, I forget that name of it right now, but I feel that I get a lot of signals from the universe. It’s like signs, it can be a bus driving past with a freaking advertisement on it and that might spark something. Or a bird might come and sit on my window and stare at me. I don’t know sometimes you can easily miss those things and just count it as a bird just came and sat on my window or you could take it as inspiration. Like there is someone trying to tell you something. I don’t know if you are spiritual or not. I am spiritual, I am not super religious but I do believe that there is a higher force that’s kind of guiding us. I really believe in fate. Like everyone has a fate and I think that if you just sit and listen to it you will be able to find your way.
