Bennett Graves | Episode 1138
Bennett Graves is a potter based in Pittsburgh, where he’s been managing Fireborn Studios (alongside owner Dan Vito) since 2018. Bennett’s work consists primarily of wheel-thrown porcelain, decorated with subtle surface variation and translucent high-fire glazes. Bennett’s heart, however, belongs to humble, rough-hewn pots crafted from locally-sourced, minimally-processed materials.

What is your biggest fear about starting your own business?
Financial failure. Not being able to pay the bills, keep up with the bookkeeping, all of that. I haven’t had to manage that side of the business yet so I have some trepidation about that.
How do you feel about putting together the programming for a community studio?
Terrifically excited. I feel like I have spent the last few years imaging how I would do what I have been doing myself. Different kinds of offerings and opportunities and ways for students to learn. That part I feel 100 percent thrilled to explore.
How would you go about the marketing plan, like getting the word out to the rest of the world?
Great question. I am fortunate…I was mentioning to have a pre-determined customer base but I have developed some Instagram skills over the years and there are also some organizations here in town that do a lot to help the arts.
How do you feel about bringing people on to carry the burden with you?
Good. You know pottery is such a great medium for sharing resources, for sharing knowledge. I have learned so much from my colleagues and coworkers over the years.
There’s a saying in entrepreneurship they say Hire towards your weaknesses. What does that mean to you?
Yeah, look for people to join your team who can kind of fill in the gaps. If you struggle with bookkeeping or struggle with scheduling, things like that. Look for people who can fill in where you may be lacking a little bit. I definitely have plenty of areas where I could use a little support.
What do you really feel like doing? What is your gut instinct?
I want to make pots! I want to spend hours and hours in the studio making new work. I am switching back to stoneware. I feel like the world is my oyster and my brain is bursting with ideas.
