You also add wood to your clay. I’m curious. Why the marriage of the two?
First of all, I think they both work together. And I don’t limit myself to any medium. I do what’s required for the idea.
We said earlier that limitations make you more creative and I’m curious why do limitations give creativity the freedom to blossom?
The way I think about it is creativity is the spirit you bring to a problem. And the world is full of problems. The world is full of limitations. Creativity wants limitations because that’s when you can actually involve your creativity and use it. It’s not just about having a million different ideas. Fo me it’s about, Here’s the resolution. How do I get there? I use creativity to get there.
Can you teach creativity?
I personally think that everybody is creative. Although not everybody has access to it. I like to think that I can teach the tools for people to access their creativity.
Why is clay such a great medium for expressing significant ideas?
It has the history which helps express an idea, I think because there’s almost knowledge that comes with it and that comes with time. It’s the simple fact that I think primally everybody gets it if worked in it or not. It’s accessible and warm, I would say visually warm. It attracts people’s attention.
Can you create ceramics without the finishing touch of firing?
Oh absolutely. I’ve witnessed it. A friend of mine did a whole exhibition of greenware that would be swept up at the end of the show. Also, why can’t ceramics be a photograph? Why can’t ceramics be a story? Why does it have to be the physical object?
Does an artist have to be in galleries to be taken seriously?
Absolutely not. I am not sure what taken seriously means but the gallery is kind of a limited way for an artist to think. There’s lots of different things you can do in your life as an artist that don’t involve the gallery that I would still consider.
