Would a pop up in brew pub be called a pub up?

I feel like that’s a great idea. Maybe you should trademark that one.

How do you ask the brew pub if they are up for it? What’s your approach to them?

This is actually what Allie does. She kind of approaches them, I help her decide. It’s really just, Here’s an event we like to do and give them a real brief description. And maybe offer to send pictures of work and then ask what they have available and what their pricing structure is and what space they have for us.

Do you give them a portion of the sales or purchase the space outright?

It is almost always a flat fee. Occasionally they have had like wanting a minimum number of sales and if that happens then we get a price break if some kind. But that’s pretty much it. Most of the time it’s just a fee.

Did you have the artists all lined up first or did you get the venue first?

With the pop-up we almost always have the artists first and then we get the venue.

When you have a pop-up at a brew pub what hours are you typically going for?

When we do the pop-up at NCECA it’s always an evening event so we are going from 6-8 or 6-9pm. Maybe a little later. The one we do here in Dallas we kind of have it split from mid-afternoon to early evening.

How far in advance do you need to secure a location?

It used to be we were staying about a year ahead but the pop-ups at NCECA are getting to be so popular, which is fantastic, but now the organizers are having to talk to each other and spread out the timing a little bit. So it’s become more collaborative, which is cool. So now we are looking two years ahead for our venue.

How big in your yearly budget do pop-ups play for you?

Well, they are definitely the vast majority. It’s got to be at least 50 percent. Some years it’s more. It just depends on how well I do.
