Stacie Forest | Episode 1181

Stacie Forest is a potter who accidentally fell into clay, and now can’t seem to wash it off. What started as mugs and bowls quickly turned into a zoo of whimsical and mythical creatures. Stacie loves exploring, teaching, and writing about the deep metaphor found in the connection of clay to creator.

Why the vibrant colors?
I think if you met me in person that would probably answer that. I love vibrant exciting colors. I like things to jump out at you, nothing muted, don’t hold back.
You have moved away from functional ware and more towards whimsical and figurative . Why the change?
I just enjoy the whimsy, the cartoony aspect of it. It’s alive and vibrant and fun and I saw a couple of artists that I really enjoyed and thought, I want to do that!
Is the big draw for you with ceramics the relationships that you get to have in a ceramic community?
Definitely. It is encouraging. It sparks my creativity and it’s fun for me to spark someone else’s creativity.
What is something you learned from a student that you didn’t do before?
Oh, that’s kind of a hard question. I know I have learned some things. It’s more that we have a lot of fun. We tease each other and we are loud and have a lot of fun. We enjoy the give and take of the art of it.
What is something outside of the studio or writing that you enjoy doing?
I really enjoy photography. I really love sports photography and I take a lot of pictures of my grandkids.
