Shelsea Dodd | Episode 539

Shelsea is a ceramic sculptor from Binghamton, NY. She received her BFA in Ceramics from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2013, and she was a post baccalaureate student at the University of Alaska Anchorage from 2016 to 2018. Shelsea’s work primarily investigates feminist and queer issues, as well as human/animal relationships and the parallels she perceives between the two. She is currently a long term resident artist at Studio 740 in Helena, MT.

Develop a Story with Shelsea Dodd

Especially in figurative art, there is often times a story line that is trying to be communicated. Shelsea explains her process of story development and how each piece becomes a snapshot in the the story line. She also talks through the significance of the title of a work and how that gives a nudge to the viewer to further explore the message. And what is the responsibility of the view? Does the viewer need to know the message in order to “get it” or is it okay to just enjoy “look” of the piece and miss the point. Shelsea goes into all this and more in the bonisode.
