Henry Kim | Episode 1190

HYUNUKO is the studio of ceramicist Henry Kim, blending function and fantasy through sculptural furniture, lighting, and vessels. Formerly Head of Ceramics at The Haas Brothers, Kim draws on themes of nature, sci-fi, and escapism to create narrative-driven works that blur the boundaries between fine art and design.

What does a typical studio day look like for you?
Typical studio day, come in, start on the computer. 30 minutes of emails, just getting ready for my communication because once i start work, I don’t want to go back in the computer. That’s followed by a 15-20 minute planning of my day. Probably I am looking at notes for the day before, I’m looking at a bug board if things I need to get done. I’m starting to plan my day. The it’s straight into production. Preparing tubes. Preparing clay for throwing. Preparing coils for throwing. I l don’t like to clean my studio and leave that for the beginning of the next day.
How far in advance are you planning your work and your work load?
Work load and the number of pieces I make or what I am doing that day?
No, first what you are making for your product line?
6 months. I work in cycles that I have pretty much planned out.
Is that based upon orders people are making or based upon what you want to get into the world?
It’s a combination. With the different vendors I work with, there’s different deadlines the west in their store and in tip of that I don’t want to just do fulfillment all the time. I want to preview work. I try to leave a percentage of time to do work that o I am interested in to progress my practice.
Do you ever think it would be good to get help in the stduio for your making?
Yes, I currently have a studio assistant right now. It’s been amazing.
What is the determining factor for when you bring someone in to help you?
A determining factor is, Do I have money to pay this person?
Do you work in a series as far as a calendar goes?
Yeah, big time. I like to work in series in the same stuff I am making. I like to make a run of lamps because I’m in lamp mode.i made the sketches and planned all the colors and make 20-30 lamps at a time.
Does intuition ever come into play?
I feel that since my work is made, to me, I like to make the same thing over and over again. Iterating. And while I am iterating it creates a task to lose myself in and while I am in the state I kind of have my best ideas.
