Deanna Wong | Episode 1191
Deanna Wong, creator of Dwadlings Art, is a Chinese-American non-binary artist creating functional ceramics and large-scale murals featuring wiggly critter-filled illustrations. At an even five foot tall, Deanna could be described as “just a little guy” and also a “very long yardstick.”

When you move to clay from a page what stays the same, or does it all change?
I think because I free-hand most of my critters everything changes. The form of the cups and vessels also inform different critters.
Why do you make the distinction between critters and characters?
Oh that’s interesting! I think they are critters in my head because they are more animal shaped, generally. And also, I haven’t fully developed characters necessarily with names and lore with them.
Do you critters change behavior beaded in the medium you are working on? Paper vs mural vs ceramic?
I think the critters change more based on my general mood and what I am kind of going through. Some of them are more screamy than others and some of them are just trying to smile through the day.
What is your factory part of the making process in ceramics? Is it the forming, the surface, the finishing?
I don’t think I’m very good at it yet. I’ve been doing it for a while, but I really like throwing on the wheel. There’s something really nice about the rhythm of it. I still get intimidated decorating. It feels like a lot of pressure still. But I think my factor part and what keeps me coming back to pottery is interacting with people and the markets, and getting to know different gallery owners.
I’m curious whether you plan your work or whether your critters show up on your work?
Most of the critters show up on my work. I have a few critters that are more meaningful to me so, bears are for my partner, bunnies are for my mom, alligators are kind of for me.
On a scale in one to I need a shower, how messy are you in the studio?
Oh, like a zero. I am the cleanest. I don’t like getting clay…I clean my hands all the time. Yeah, zero. (Laughter)

Paul!!! Love the podcast and really enjoyed this episode.
And, I, too, used to go through eggnog withdrawal.
But a year or so ago, I began making my own near-eggnog. And honestly, this year when the real thing came around, I found it a bit rich, so I stuck with my homemade.
1 cup half and half
2-3 tbl sugar
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Heat the above until the sugar dissolves. Then add:
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp rum extract
enjoy!
That sounds delicious! I am having a nog withdrawal issue. I even went to the store today hoping to find some random left over carton. I may have to try your recipe. Thank you!
