A Potter. A Business. | Kandice Signorino | Episode 981

Kandice Signorino | Episode 981

Kandice Signorino’s pottery career began in 2020, when work and life took a shift! When looking to find fun and creative things to do at home, as a family, Kandice came across pottery videos online. Kandice quickly fell in love with the world of ceramics, found where she could buy clay, and started playing with clay at her kitchen table. Things spiraled wildly out of control! Kandice watched every Jon The Potter video created and taught herself how to do pottery. Bringing beauty to everyday functional pieces has been Kandice’s driving goal ever since!

Where did you get your photography skills from?

Well, is it the photography of my pieces or is it the photography of me?

It’s both actually. You have a vibe that’s going through your feed.

The photography done out in the lovely forest is by a lovely girl named Alexa. But everything else product related…I do it with my phone. I’ve got a light box and I’ve just been trying to figure it out.

Do you think presentation is all that important in capturing an audience’s attention?

That’s a good question. I think the answer is both yes and no. I think it depends on the audience. For me, I try and keep my page within a certain order. And like I said previously I am pretty sure I am ADD and it’s that structure that I need for some reason for me to keep myself accountable with posting regularly. So what you see when you see my page is two product photos and a reel.

How many streams of sales opportunities have you developed?

I started mostly just with markets. Just local markets. A lovely lady reached out to me on Instagram named Linda McKenzie and she saw something in me and asked me to come and I was like, No one is going to want my stuff.   She insisted I come so if it wasn’t for her it would have taken me a lot longer. But I get such amazing local support so my main sales stream I would have to say is through markets locally. Which branched out to multiple local shops here in town as well and then obviously there’s online on my website as well.

What does a day of making look like for you?

I have three kids, two still at home, so my days usually look like the basic mom getting your kids out the door  all of that. I try to be in my pottery studio which is conveniently and not conveniently in my basement. We all know the pros and cons of that situation. But I try to be there at nine in the morning and my son usually has to be at his job for just before four so I kind of that 9 to 3:30 shift and that is dedicated to working in my studio.

What is your favorite step in the making process and what is your least favorite step?

I love working on the wheel. I think that drew me in so heavily because it is such a therapeutic process. Who needs counseling when you have a pottery wheel and you know how the center clay? My least favorite is trimming and attaching handles. I like trimming more than attaching handles, so probably just attaching handles.
