Do you see Instagram activity as a business venture?
Yes, absolutely, it’s a great platform for marketing purposes and business purposes.
When you look at your followers do you tend to see faces behind those numbers?
I actually do, yes. Well, you have Instagram and they have stats that tell you where they are from, the age, women, and you can see that so a lot of my followers, also my clients, and a lot of potters follow me from South America and all different countries. So yes, I see it and also when they comment I see their ID and I can see, Oh, she’s a potter, or Oh, this person is a blogger. I get that idea.
How quickly do you respond to people when they comment or DM you? What is your typical time frame for getting back to them?
During the day I try to respond right away. And if I have an answer, yes. But I try not to take it to my bedroom. You have to separate your work life and your personal life. So you kind of have to set the boundary there so once I am not working….they understand that I will answer tomorrow. If it’s an emergency, I’ve never had that situation but if there’s something that needs to be answered then I will do it right away.
Even with boundaries, how do you go about show you as a real person? How do you show that on a platform that you want to still have boundaries with?
You can use your stories as your more personal side. So I will use my pottery while I am cooking or making coffee and they get a glimpse of what I like and what I do. And also your comment can be more detailed. Instead of saying here is a sixteen ounce mug you tell what you like about it and you give more details, that kind of helps.
Besides giveaways what other ways do you reward your followers?
I give them more information. I have an Etsy site too but I give them quick information. Like if I had a flash sale I will put it out there. I will say, I am having a flash sale real quick go over there. So I try to communicate with them so they get a little bit of benefit of following me. I also post videos. I have a lot of potters follow me from South America and they told me that they don’t have resources out there. So they look at my videos and kind of educate themselves. So I don’t speak Spanish but my husband does so I try to tell him, Hey, answer their question. or Hey, if you have more questions I will try and teach you and give you more resource.
Do you treat stories and reels and your feed differently?
Yes, I do. Because your feed stays forever. It will stay longer so you will have more power but stories will have more connection where you can give quick info. They post in a feed is a little more valuable because it will stay longer and people have access to it all the time.
How much time do you spend on Instagram both recreationally and as a business practice?
I have never really measured that time before. For stories I use my personal time so when I make food and stuff I just use my phone. I don’t have a measurement but my feed…I would say maybe 30 minutes to an hour.
