HOW DO YOU ESTABLISH YOUR PRICE POINT?
It kind of revolves around time investment. If something is pretty straight forward and I can polish it off in a certain period of time it is one price point, if it takes a little longer it is another price point.
HOW HAVE YOUR PRICES CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? DO YOU SET A TIME FOR YOUR PRICES TO GO UP?
I don’t know that they have a whole lot. I haven’t been out of grad school long enough to see a huge change in price.
DO YOU DO COMMISSION WORK?
I do and I have.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR MARKETING GOING IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS OR SO? DO YOU SEE THE COLLECTIBLE MARKET GROWING?
That’s my Achilles tendon, Paul. I hate to say this but I have a pretty terrible business mind. I don’t really pay attention to it. I make work and I try and get the work out there.
SOMEONE WANTS TO BECOME A FIGURATIVE ARTIST AND MAKE A LIVING AT IT, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THAT PERSON.
The advice I give my students, I try to explain to them when you are in school, when you are doing art, a lot of people believe in order to really succeed at what you do you really have to love it. I tell them that that isn’t enough. You really have to move past the point of loving what you do into becoming obsessed with what you do.
WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHILE YOU ARE MAKING?
Depends what I’m doing. Sam Beam and Iron and Wine saw me through grad school. Something slow and emotive that tells a really good story tends to be what I listen to.
