Creating ceramics with coil and pinch techniques provides a tactile, hands-on experience. Starting with a simple lump of clay, you mold and shape it, transforming it into something unique and expressive. Emilie’s mastery of combining coil and pinch techniques produces stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces. Her work is a true reflection of her skill and creativity, and we are excited to have her share her approach and insights into these techniques.
In this workshop we will:
- explore the building method of coil and pinch
- learn how to create a medium size vase (finished piece should be about 8″ tall).
- use rolled logs of clay and see how to overlay them
- understand how each coil building upon the last to create a piece from the bottom up
- focus on building strong even walls that are centered forms with undulating pinch marks
And so much more. Emilie chose this shape in particular because it touches on three vectors of directional building: cylindrical upward coiling, pinching outward and inward, at least once but twice in most instances. This not only yields a beautiful form, but it also teaches the building blocks to take off and build from your imagination. Emilie loves that with coil and pinch pots, it is possible to build quite large with proper technique, without relying on strength, as may be more common on a wheel.
Here is what Dora said about this class:
Thank you for showing your method. I particularly learned patience and consistency with the coils, while at the same time to not be perfect! I love the pinch marks of your pots the most!
And Melissa said,
Thank you Emilie! Great class! I can’t wait to try this at home…
The class is now available to watch immediately and you can come back as many times you like or need.
