Sebastian Moh | Episode 727
In celebration of The Potters Cast turning 7 years old this week, I am pulling out of the archives some of my favorite episodes. This conversation with Sabastian took place back in 2018 and was a face-to-face meeting at NCECA. I was already a big fan of Sabastian, but I fell all the more in love with him through this conversation.

What is your muse? What makes you think?
I never think that way to prepare for this question! What makes me think? I don’t know. Things that intrigue me. Curiosity.
Is curiosity a trait or is that something you can nurture? Can you become more curious?
Of course I think you can. I personally think you can.
Where does your creativity come from?
In terms of design or process?
Where does creativity for both design and process come from?
I think I like things that evoke a feeling. I am assuming it is an aesthetic response to certain designs or things in my own observations around me. For example, a rock on the street, or by the river. There are thousands of rocks but one rock pops out and I think, “Look at this rock.” and examine it. Or I may be walking down the street and see thousands of walls but one particular wall pops out and grabs my attention. Whether I can articulate those feelings or not, I am trying to recreate what triggered those responses in my work.
Do you want your work to evoke a feeling?
Yes, I do. I try and evoke feeling. Whether it is successful or not, I cannot say that, but I do have that goal, to invoke feelings in my work.
What kind of feelings are you trying to invoke?
I think about all the common, sad, happiness, all this, we have common universal feelings, regardless of race or what vocation you are, we all have a similar way of express love or the essence of life. So I try and invoke those universal feelings in the work.
Does it take courage to start asking people to look at your work?
To me, yes, it does. I am a shy person and an introvert. If you don’t know me and I don’t know you, our conversation will be cut short. It’s been nice meeting you. Then I will just pause for a long time and we will look at each other. It is awkward and I am trying to overcome that, it is very hard.
As an introvert how to do build the confidence to not be the quiet guy?
No, I am still a quiet guy. Nothing’s changed.
What is the most critical thing to do to have your voice get heard?
Be honest.
Explain that.
Be honest about your ability and be honest about what are your weaknesses and strengths. Know your weakness and try to learn how to overcome that,I mean in terms of techniques and skill level.
If you are being honest then we have to open to other people’s opinions. How do you tell the difference between an honest comment and a trollish comment?
I can’t. Maybe I could, but most of the time I can’t
What is your favorite tool to work with?
Oh wow, I have so many tools. Every tool has it’s own important thing. What is my favorite tool? My hands.
