Dale Doering is a Colorado native and live in Loveland, Colorado, and has spent 40+ years in the construction industry building and remodeling homes. Dale took a pottery class in High School and made a few pottery pieces. About 15 years ago Dale got a chance to take a pottery class in Grand Junction Colorado and was introduced to the pottery wheel. In 2019 Dale set up a pottery studio at home. Using his middle name Allen Pottery was born.

How do you know it is time to make a change?

When you get up in the morning and you dread putting on your boots, getting in your truck, and heading to the jobsite. That’s when you know it is time for a change.

How do you know it is time to make a change when you are the only person in the studio?

I think, in my case, that when I become overwhelmed with the process, then I will find someone to do something that doesn’t take me to do it. Such as shipping… find someone to come in for a couple hours a day and pack up the boxes. Then I don’t have to worry about that.

How do you find the right person to do that?

There is a whole work force out there called stay at home moms and they would love something to do for a couple hours a day.

Do you keep an eye on your happiness levels?

Absolutely. I do that on a daily basis because of the years that I spent in an unhappy state running my tail off trying to build houses and do big remodels. So yes, I definitely keep track of that.

Is it okay to give ourselves permission to chase joy?

I believe so. Especially with where I am in life. It may look different for a younger person, but definitely with where I am at, absolutely.

How do we balance out being responsible and being a joy seeker?

Yes, you definitely have to be responsible and provide for whatever choices you’ve made. If you chose to have a family, then that needs to be something that you focus on as well. That does add a different dimension when you do have a family. I just think it is so important to be happy with what you are doing.
