I got to tell you, I’m nothing but stoked that we ended up getting a two-for-one today! I’d like to ask for both of you to answer. But first, let’s start with you, Rob. What’s your favorite form to make?

Favorite form? I prefer sort of a rounded shape, really, with a narrow base. It’s kind of more of an organic shape to be rounded, I think, rather than straight edges.

And how about for you, Deb, which is your favorite form to decorate?

I really like it when we have something really large for me to decorate so that I can be a bit freer. It’s nice to be able to stand up and use my arm to create the brush strokes and movements rather than the smaller pieces. Although the smaller pieces have their charm as well, because you can do them quite quickly. But I do really like it when we’ve got something really large. and maybe quite wide, it gives me more options. I can put basically whatever I want on there. It can be a bit more limiting if something’s a bit narrower. But again, you can just work creatively with something that’s a bit more restrictive. But yeah, something large and wide.

How about time of day? I know that Rob ends up working quite a bit, throughout the week at the other studio. So Debbie, for you, what’s your favorite time of day to be decorating?

Well, I also, I mostly decorate in the evenings because we work together down in the workshop. In the evenings it’s nice because you’ve had your whole day. I’ve had my day to get outside and be inspired by whatever I’m being inspired by the grasses. And then you come down in the evening and it’s quite relaxing. So I think the evening really.

How about for you, Rob?

Yeah, I prefer evening actually, same reason. So you’ve done your busy day, your work day. And because there’s basically no pressure, I’m doing it for myself. So if I make one pot, that’s fine. So I’ll say evening’s good.

You guys are working this side hustle, which has been a family passion and a couple passion. And And you also have the daytime gigs going on. But where do you see yourself with the making that you both do together? Where do you see yourself, say, in three to five years? Robert?

Well, in that sort of time, probably just doing more of the same, really. I don’t really want to change too much. Eventually, I’d like to to have my own workshop and just work for myself when my body’s all old and broken and I just really can’t do the production. But yeah, just the same position really, just getting better.

And Debbie?

I think we’re working towards having our own workshop, but in our mind it’s more in kind of eight to 10 years that we’re going to be making a move to somewhere a little bit cheaper where we’ll be able to buy a bigger workshop. At the moment we’re restricted by space and we couldn’t create enough work in this workshop to be able to do it full time and maintain both of our salaries. So at the moment we’re just getting a heads down and working towards our eight-year plan that there’s already been two years. So it’s more 8 to 10 years at the moment.

I know you guys both have a family that you are, that you’re raising, so I’m curious… Deb, we’ll start with you. What’s a favorite family activity that you just love to do?

It’s walking. Even though most of them moan when we start out, by the end of it, it’s really nice just to see their little souls come alive. You know, you’ve got one who’s almost a teenager and will have a hood up as you walk out of the door, and by the end of it, she’s running around and climbing trees and the littlest ones picking up fossils and looking at snails and they’re picking flowers. It’s just… I love it. I just think it’s really a valuable activity for us all to do. Because you come back reset as well and everyone’s all energized.

Sure. How about you, Rob?

I love playing board games with them, you know, because they’re… interested in it and their full attention is focused on that one thing, whereas there’s no other distractions around when that sort of thing is going on.
