Anthony Carrillo began his pottery journey in San Diego, CA and is now apprenticing with Simon Levin in Illinois. Anthony’s past year has been centered around wood firing, kiln building, and developing a comprehensive body of work. Anthony has assisted in two train kiln builds and helped design and build two small wood-soda kilns. Anthony’s playful altered forms display expressive gestural movement and applied textures that interact with the atmosphere in the kiln.

When a person is going into an apprenticeship with Simon Levin, what kind of what kind of frame of mind should a person have as they approach this?

I would say, be very open to accepting critique, because that’s such a big part of it, and ready to get your hands dirty and do some work.

There are a lot of unseen skills that that are not relevant through social media or YouTube. So I’m curious for you, what’s an unseen skill that you have wrapped into your life?

An unseen skill that I’m trying to hold on to, is balance. Simon does a really good job of balancing his time in the studio with making time for fun, getting out those Wiggles. And, yeah, it’s inspiring. I want to be better at that.

I’ve heard it said that talent is secondary, reliability is primary, because talent can be taught and reliability is a core character issue. So how, how important for you is it to be just the reliable person who shows up and does what is supposed to be done?

Yeah, incredibly important. That’s, that’s the person I strive to be.

How much of your relationship and your time there is built on questions?

Ooh, a lot of it. You know, it’s important for me to ask questions to get the right feedback that I’m looking for, and I think I’m finally getting better at it.

How important is it to learn the pace, not just the product?

Yeah, it’s that’s so important for keeping yourself going, not just getting stuck doing one thing, making time for everything that’s important to you matters.

How much of the business side are you able to get the inside scoop on?

Yeah, a lot of it. He, you know, Simon’s been very open about his finances. That’s part of the apprenticeship, that’s part of the education, something we need to be thinking about for our future success. So yeah, he’s very open about talking about taxes and forms and anything we have questions about.
