What is your favorite part of the wood firing process?
I would say my favorite part of the wood firing process for me is the final loading day. We finished our making cycle and all the hopes and mysterious quality of what is to come is live in the air.
What was your favorite thing about planning a wood fire conference?
My favorite part of the planning process would have been the opportunity to reach out to host kiln owners and develop that relationship because in the process of them deciding to join in I found that this idea was taking on a life of it’s own already.
What was the most challenging part of planning a conference?
The technological side. Thank goodness for google contacts. Just getting the message out to folks without sending them too much information too often.
Now the conference is underway and you are in the middle of it. What is your favorite part of the conference?
It was the pottery tailgate the next day because we had the dinner the night before and people had hung around the peak temperature of the firing but it was just seeing people re-connecting and actual friendships congealing and the pots to prove it. Not just the experiences but the outcome was there to be compared with that.
What was the most challenging part of the conference being in the middle of it?
It was probably in the day leading up to the conference and everything was happening the next day. We had a gallery to install, work to unpack and all the details in getting the gallery set up and ready to go. I was also making all the custom wood pedestals for each piece so it got to be a little much because a firing was going on at the same time as well.
What is one thing you would like to see done a little better at your next conference?
Well I think the thing that I could do that could improve the whole experience would be reaching out to others for help and finding ways to work with others so the overall experience is better, not just for myself, but for the conference participants and the host kiln owners.
