How would you describe your sculptural work?

I would say that they are biomorphic abstractions that investigate how the body responds to environments.

When you are making your biomorphic organic work what is your favorite tool to use?

My hands. But aside from that probably the metal rib. A serrated metal rib. I have one that is really old and it is extra thick and so rusted, it’s quite used. But any other one I try to use doesn’t live up to it so it’s my favorite tool. But I like it because it’s so strong. I mostly coil build and I love it because it’s what I use to make everything come together.

What is your favorite tool for functional work?

I love trimming so…I actually don’t know the names of any of the tools that trim. But the one that has a triangle on one side and an oval on the other side, that’s probably my favorite.

Do you ever use models for your work?

Yeah, not a live version but sometimes images or  sometimes just thinking about anatomy and also thinking about environments. So a lot of my glazes are inspired by things found in nature. So coral or the beach. I am very much inspired by nature.

Do you use any commercial glazes or do you strictly use your own glaze collection?

I make my own glazes but I am not completely opposed to commercial glazes. But I would say probably at least 80 percent I make.

For that 20 percent you use is there a glaze company that you love?

No. Definitely not. I like to try many things. And also it just depends what is available at Sial, my provider for ceramic materials.

Does the support and  opinion of your family matter to you as a maker and as an artist?

That’s an interesting question. Yes and no, I guess. I feel like they are supportive but I feel like even if they weren’t I would still be doing what I am doing. But I don’t think it’s something that I am always thinking about. If that makes sense. I think at the end of the day my family just wants me to be happy and able to make a living so if I am able to do both of those that’s great. But I also think that they trust me to figure out a way because I have always been able to do that and I’ve always been really independent and stubborn so I’m still trying to make it work.
