15 Years In And Testing The Waters | Jackie Wright | Episode 976

Jackie Wright | Episode 976

Jackie Wright started pottery 14 years ago taking a 1 year evening course. Jackie quickly became obsessed with wheel throwing and that has been her focus ever since. Jackie fits pottery in alongside her day job, making functional porcelain pieces comprising clean lines and minimal forms whilst still trying to retain an organic quality. Jackie has recently added stoneware into her range as an alternative canvas to serve her ever growing glaze development interest.

Why do you make your own glazes rather than use the many glazes that are out there?

Two reasons, one is I might be chasing a particular color and finish that isn’t available commercially. And the other is it’s the only way I have in keeping my work unique.

Is creativity you feel something that is learned or do you feel like you are born with it?

I think it’s a bit of both. I think different people have it in different degrees, some people are born with it and it drips out of every pore. And I think we all have an innate amount of creativity in which it’s been nurtured and drawn out and where it hasn’t as a child then I think that’s where we learn as adults.

When you sit at the wheel what is your go-to piece that you would naturally want to start throwing?

A cylinder. It’s like a warm up for me, throwing a cylinder. And it’s probably the hardest thing to throw well. So yeah, a cylinder I think, and I see where it takes me from there.

Do you have a list of things that you go through for your making process? Like a list of pieces that you are going to make?

So when I decide that I am going to do repetition throwing I will decide the shapes that I am going to throw and how many I throw is limited by how many bats I have, because I throw on bats. So generally I have ten bats of certain sizes and then my very small bats I have twenty. So I will either throw a series of ten or twenty.

What’s got you excited in the studio right now?

It’s a very strange thing to be excited about but I’ve got two new transparent glazes and they are gorgeous.

If you could download a skill, what ceramic skill would you download?

Tap centering. I’m teaching myself and it would save me so much time.

Do you ever see yourself taking ceramics full-time?

That’s the dream. That’s the dream but I have to find a way of doing it where I can replace my current income stream with income from pottery. That will be the goal.
