How are you getting feedback from both your customers and your peers on the quality of your work?

Someone says, I love your stuff that you are making. That is my feedback. Or some colleague says, You need to improve with your glaze. Maybe with raku or stoneware.

How do you make your work that both honors who you are and what you are trying to do with your work and balance that with the idea that someone else is going to be using it and holding it?

I try to make beautiful stuff for myself, first of all, and then I know for sure there are people like me who loves pre-Columbia, who loves shiny metal, who loves ceramics, who loves beetles, who love entomology, who love culture, ethnicity. I think so many people in the world, so many artists that need to focus on what you are making. each piece is destined for one person. And I am happy if that would be my work or another’s.

Is time the only factor we need for improvement?

I think it’s a big factor. But I think your passion is more about it. If you take a lot of time learning and take a lot of time polishing your skills, okay, but if you don’t have the passion for making things I think it’s just doing it for money.

Because of your jewelry background, how did you know when it was time to add the next factor of the intangible, like creativity, skill level,…how did you know when it was time to put that into your pricing model?

That is not easy. For a start, people need to tell you, Oh, this is a piece of art! You know? But you need to feel it. You need to feel that you’re worth the time you learned, all the stuff that you put into the work that you are making. When you see the piece finished, you know it. This is my stuff. This is me. I put all myself in these pieces of work and I want you to have it and this is of value.

Do you feel like you are putting the intangible portion of your work into the pricing of your work?

Now, yes. Looking at my work I think I can improve so much that is work is okay. Marcia is giving you this price because I know that I can do a million times better and I am arriving. That doesn’t mean that I don’t put all myself or what I am learning and all my passion and all my love into my pieces, no. That’s not what I mean. But from where I am, yeah, I think I am trying to improve. Buy my stuff before I increase the price! (laughter)
