Do you tend to pick a word for the year, generally speaking to kind of give you guidance for your intention for what you want to see happen for you?

I would not say I necessarily pick a particular word. I think things are always kind of shifting. I think as an artist and a small business owner it is important to pivot. Every single thing that we encounter will pivot us some way, you know. Something happens with your work and you pivot and everything, but I think at the base it is always important to know what you want and why. Like why are you doing this and what do you want to be known for and your reasoning behind it. Some people will have a specific mantra for many years, like you, for your word of the year, I think it does the same thing though. It brings you back to stop and center and focus on what your goal is.

Is it important to turn our doubts upside down and doubt them?

Well I guess it depends on what the doubt is. I think it goes back to thinking more positively. Like I think it is so easy for us to doubt that something is going to succeed. Well why don’t we ever doubt the failure then? I think more of us focus on doubting the success and the good but we never doubt the bad. So if you are going to doubt one then it is only fair to doubt the other.

Let’s talk about kindness. Should we be kind to ourselves about mistakes like we would be to a child?

I actually call this self bullying. We are so quick to whistle blow on the cyber bullies or the mean girls in high school and that they are bullying these other people but we can’t control what other people do or what other people say, but we can control our own action. A lot of people are not talking or whistle blowing on the self bullying which I think hurts us a lot more than what other people can do and occurs a lot more often. It is self bullying and I also call it Not Enoughism. It’s like well, I am not good enough, I am not pretty enough, I am not talented enough. We do all these things to put ourselves down where that is the number one bullying thing that we could stop-is the bullying we do to ourselves. If more and more people started to treat themselves better and think better, number one, those outside bullies would not affect us as much and number two, if those outside bullies started to stop bullying themselves, they probably wouldn’t be picking on people because they would fee; better about themselves. So I think it is something that is starting to be talked about more and hopefully it will continue to be talked about more.

Does that mean that we should talk positively to ourselves?

Absolutely! Absolutely. You talk more to yourself than you do to anyone else. We all have the little chitter chatter going on in our brain and that is what you are feeding yourself. So yeah, if you are going to be giving someone else a compliment, then you yourself need to give yourself a compliment too because that is what you are hearing the most of.

Does having an attitude of gratitude or a daily practice of thankfulness, is that critical on having a positive outlook on life?

I don’t know that I could stay as positive as I am without gratitude.  So for me, they kind of go hand in hand. I think having gratitude make everything a little easier. It makes being positive a little bit easier. It is seeing the good a little a little more easily. Being grateful helps you see the opportunities ahead of you more clearly. I’m not saying you can’t do anything else without it, but life is going to be a whole lot easier and fulfilled with being grateful.

Does that help you then be a giver and is that an important part of having a positive attitude? 

Actually I have always been a giver, almost to a fault. I would just give and give and give. I would give until my cup was almost empty. Gratitude has helped me to receive. Giving is part of my personal nature and I love it. But just because I give doesn’t mean I can’t also receive. So gratitude helped me to see everything I received, but also to accept the things I’ve received.

One of the things that happy people tend to do is that they tend to do random acts of kindness, and you have always seemed that way to me. So when was the last random act of kindness that you did?

I think, especially as women, we tend to be harsh on ourselves about our physical appearance. So when I am out and about I keep an eye out for women that are dressed well or their hair is nice. Then I give that person a compliment because I am sure that they probably don’t get enough of those through out the day. I was at a food bank event where I do some volunteer work and there was this lady at this event and she had this fabulous dress on. I went up to her and said, Your dress is sensational and it looks awesome on you. You could see that she was taken aback and she said, Oh my goodness, thank you! Everything on her face just softened. So I try to be in the habit that if I think something nice about someone, then I just say it.
